The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
